I’m sure a mathematician could put a good formula together based on the nature and concentration of the contaminants of concern, the volume of material and the location of the site. However, for that you already need to have a lot of the attributing information…such as ground water implications, target levels, clients time constraints and available space for on site treatment, etc, etc, etc… and without those it wouldn’t give you a ballpark figure.
So the simple answer is ‘phone a remediation contractor’. The more data you can give us, the more precise we can be and the more useful the pricing information we can give you back.
Guess work for disposal of hazardous soils can start with landfill gate prices ranging anywhere from £45->£150/tonne (and no I don’t know the density of your soils although you could estimate somewhere between 1.6 – 2.2 tonnes per cubic metre). Then you need to add landfill tax (currently £102.10/tonne as of April 2013), haulage, loading, duty of care and EA/SEPA paperwork, H&S implications on site, etc, etc…!
Treatment of materials at an off site facility should be cheaper, £10 – £300, and you may not incur landfill tax. If they can take the material then why not consider on-site treatment as it would probably be cheaper…?
Treatment on-site could cut your costs in half in some circumstances, however, I really can’t elaborate as the options are numerous…bioremediation, chemical oxidation, soil washing, stabilisation, etc, etc, etc…! You will need space and plenty of time for most treatment options.
I’m sure I’ve not been very helpful, apart from giving our competitors some info, but if you are looking for a ballpark figure the above will give you an indication as to the issues we face when we’re asked the inevitable question…”how much do you think it will cost…?”
