One evening last summer we were called out to a major incident where diesel had entered into a burn (Stream for those non Scots reading this…!). Approx 1.5 km of water course was affected. By eleven at night we had deployed booms, absorbants and missed yoga…!
‘So what’ I hear you cry…is this just another ‘LOOK AT US’ and ‘AREN’T WE BRILLIANT BLOG’…No…!
When our client discovered the spill they did the right thing by contacting the EA immediately. They then waited, waited some more and waited further still until after many hours they were advised to place booms across the burn…! So they called us.
Following a quick conversation the ditch running in to the burn was dammed up to mitigate further spread of diesel, a contaminant pond was formed (better to contaminate a small amount of soil than an entire water course)and straw bales were placed across the burn to prevent further migration downstream.
Lessons to be learnt;
- Don’t wait for the Environment Agency.
- Prevent further migration by any reasonable means.
- Contain the spill.
- Call out the professionals…no not Bodie & Doyle in their Capri…!
