Contamination does have it’s uses, I only just found out that this means more than say producing energy from waste, or making Japanese Knotweed wine (seriously).
Guy Riefler an Environmental Engineer, and artist John Sabraw have produced art from toxic mine water discharge. Iron in the discharge waters oxidises in to some brilliant colours when exposed to oxygen, they’ve used this principle to produce art work including the images above, though I doubt you’ll find many mine water discharges quite as pretty as what you can see here.
The real beauty in the operation is the intentions the guys have to clean up the toxic sludge contaminated rivers which inspire their work, and funding the work by selling paint made from these iron pigments.
